Stop Rust from Spreading Before It’s Too Late
Rust is like a silent killer for your vehicle. Once it starts, it doesn’t stop — unless you do something about it.
That’s where our Pause Rust service comes in. We take your vehicle, treat the existing rust and halt its progress, preventing further damage.
You don’t have to wait until the rust gets out of control.
Stopping rust now saves you from expensive repairs or worst case, having to scrap your car.
Why Choose Rust Stop’s Pause Rust Service?
1. Catch Rust Early, Save Big Later
The earlier you stop rust, the better. By pausing rust’s growth now, you’re saving your vehicle from extensive future damage — and saving yourself from costly repairs down the road.
2. Neutralize Existing Rust
We don’t just cover up rust — our Pause Rust program treats it. Our proven process deeply penetrates and neutralises rust, preventing it from spreading and attacking more of your car’s structure.
3. Eco-Friendly, Safe Treatments
For Pause Rust, we only use eco-friendly products that are tough on rust but gentle on the planet. No harmful chemicals, just effective rust prevention.
4. Preserve Your Vehicle’s Value or Keep it Longer
Rust spreads fast, and it can quickly eat into your car’s value. By pressing pause on rust, we help you keep your car in good shape for longer, helping keep it on the road and preserving its worth for years to come.
How It Works:
Our Pause Rust service comes in 3 grades of comprehensive treatment, which depending on your car’s value and how long you intend to keep it are designed to either greatly slow down or even halt the progression of rust.
Step 1: For our Gold level first treatment, we remove road wheels and wheel arch liners before thoroughly deep-cleaning the vehicle’s undercarriage to remove dirt, grease and grime.
Step 2: We manually remove all thick scaled or scabby areas of rust and open cavity grommets ready for treatment.
Step 3: We apply two layers of protective eco-friendly coating that deeply penetrates and seals all undercarriage elements, subframes, steering and suspension components, with additional high-build brush application focused on heavily rusted areas, or areas at greater risk of abrasion. This creates a long-lasting and self-healing barrier against moisture and salt, and forms an excellent foundation for future lighter re-treatments.
How Long Does It Last?
Properly maintained, our Pause Rust treatments can stop or slow a vehicle’s existing rust almost indefinitely.
While all our Pause Rust services have been shown to offer excellent long-term results, we recommend a follow-up light treatment after 6 months, especially for more heavily rusted vehicles, or cars located in coastal regions – and then a program of annual top-ups to fully keep rust at bay.
For lower value cars with extensive rust, where the intention is simply to extend lifespan for a few years at the lowest possible cost, we can supply home-treatment top up kits for easy DIY application.
Who Is This Service For?

- Vehicles driven in coastal areas or on salted roads where rust is a constant threat

Pause Rust – Frequently Asked Questions
1. Why should I “pause” rust?
Once rust starts, it spreads fast. Our Pause Rust service stops rust in its tracks before it causes serious structural damage. Fixing rust later is far more expensive — pausing it now is the smart way to save time, money, and ultimately your vehicle.
2. Can you stop rust that’s already started?
Yes! Our Pause Rust service is specifically designed to treat rust that’s already appeared – and will either stop or at least greatly slow it’s progress. Our Pause Rust treatment program will neutralize the rust, halting its spread and with top-up treatments protect your vehicle from further corrosion for years to come.
3. How effective is this at stopping rust long-term?
While we don’t remove rust with this service (that’s what our Rewind service is for), we can stop or slow it from spreading. With regular maintenance, this can extend your vehicle’s life by many years, even in tough conditions.
4. What kind of rust can this service treat?
We treat light to moderate rust — typically surface rust affecting the undercarriage and structural areas like sills, subframes, and wheel wells. If your car is already heavily rusted, we can slow the damage and extend your vehicle’s life – or for high value cars and heavily-rusted classics, our Rewind service might be more appropriate.
5. How does this treatment work?
Our Pause Rust process involves cleaning the affected areas, removing loose scale and heavy scabbing, before applying a rust-neutralizing treatment to stop the spread by penetrating and sealing the area with a self-healing eco-friendly protective coating. As discussed with all Pause Rust customers, depending on the service level option of Bronze, Silver or Gold chosen, this process will be more or less comprehensive and result in increasingly better long-term protection.
6. How long does the Pause Rust service last?
For most vehicles, the treatment lasts for well over a year, even in harsh conditions like salted roads or coastal areas, however for optimal protection we recommend a second light application 6 months from the first, followed by yearly inspections and touch-ups to maintain a comprehensive coating.
7. Is your treatment eco-friendly?
Yes, for our Pause Rust services, we only use eco-friendly, lanolin-based treatments that are safe for the environment. No harsh chemicals — just powerful rust control.
8. Can I still drive my car through bad weather after the treatment?
Absolutely! Although we recommend avoiding driving at speed in heavy rain for the first 7 days until the first treatment has fully cured, we accept that this is the UK and we all have lives that need to go on. After first treatment, we’d prefer you keep your car near-static and dry for at least 24 hours, but even if the worst happens, you’ll still enjoy a lot more protection than without the treatment. Once fully cured our protective coating is designed to withstand and defend against rain, snow, and salted roads – and will maintain protection when jet washed at up to 3000psi.
9. How long does the process take?
We have three service levels for Pause Rust; Bronze, Silver and Gold – each with an increasing amount of pre-treatment preparation for a first application. Typically, our Bronze and Silver services can be completed in a day, whilst our gold treatment will take at least 24hrs and may take up to 3 days.
After the first treatment, any following top-ups will typically take no more than half a day.
10. Will this service affect my car’s paint or finish?
No, the treatment is applied to the areas where rust is forming, such as the undercarriage, body cavities and inside metal seams. It won’t usually touch or affect your vehicle’s exterior paint or finish – however we have found that on cars with extensive hidden rust such as within wheel-arches or body cavities, in cases where there are pinholes of damage that have penetrated to just below the surface of the paint – the following can happen…
Due to the hygroscopic (attracting moisture) nature of rust and the creeping hydrophobic (repelling moisture) nature of the treatment, we do sometimes see repelled water within the treated rust forcing it’s way internally through these pinholes and causing bubbling of water under the surface of the paint. This only seems to happen when the hidden corrosion is already deep, and in such cases the body panel concerned is typically in need of repair or replacement.
11. Will this service save me from needing expensive rust repairs later?
Yes! By stopping light to moderate rust now, you’re preventing it from causing more damage and spreading into more critical areas of your vehicle. This can save you from major repair bills down the line, such as replacing or repairing structural components. In cases where there is already extensive rust, a Pause Rust treatment can give vehicle owners longer to assess and ultimately repair or replace components, extending the vehicle’s life by vastly slowing down the spread of rust. Of course there are cases where extensive rust has already spread too far and we can discuss options during your free inspection.
12. What’s the difference between this and a full rust removal service?
Pause Rust is about stopping rust where it is, or in cases of deep rust, slowing down it’s spread to a crawl. The Pause treatment doesn’t remove rust entirely like our Rewind service does. Think of this as your ‘stitch in time’ that either stops further damage, or at worst can extend a rusty car’s life.
13. Will the treatment hold up in coastal or high-salt environments?
Yes! Our treatment is ideal for high-salt environments like coastal towns or winter roads and has been designed for these type of environments. We do recommend regular check-ups and top-up treatments in these areas to ensure the rust stays paused.
14. Is this service suitable for classic cars?
Yes! As you no doubt know, some of the best classics, especially those from the 1970s left the factory with rust already in place and are known for shocking build quality, completely bare metal in seams and leaky cavities designed to pool water. If you have a classic car that’s showing signs of surface rust, and let’s face it there is no unrestored classic in the UK that DOESN’T have it’s share of rust, this is the service for you. Our Pause Rust treatment is a great way to stop the spread before it becomes a major restoration project, or lets you delay, save up for and mentally prepare for that restoration!
15. What if the rust has already caused serious damage?
If the rust is already severe and is on it’s way to causing significant damage, your choice will be down to finances and the value of the car affected. If your car is a much-loved classic, it might be time for our Rewind service to fully remove and restore the affected areas. If on the other hand your car is simply a low-value runabout you need to get to work, the Pause service may at least get you a couple more years service out of the vehicle before the need for major repair, or scrappage.
This can be discovered and discussed at your initial free inspection.
